Statement of Purpose

My goal with this project is to serve the educational needs of our local PG county community. As a future educator, I know how critical literacy is to success in future academic endeavors. The goal of the Maryland Family Literacy Program (formerly known as Partners in Print) is to provide the families of children in kindergarten through 3rd grade with the tools to improve their child's literacy skills. My goal as a mentor is to supplement what is already being taught in school and provide families with explanations and activities to help their children succeed. My work with MFLP has been an enriching experience and has given me a greater understanding of some of the tasks and difficulties associated with my future career.
Prior to the COVID pandemic, I was going into elementary schools in PG county bi-weekly and giving presentations on various literacy-related topics and other topics such as college readiness and the importance of completing the Census. I loved being able to interact with the children and seeing their enthusiasm to participate in learning activities. I also loved giving parents ideas of things they can do at home to help their child's learning. During the pandemic, I have been creating videos and worksheets on important topics that are then dispersed to these families. It was a challenging transition, but the experience was rewarding, nonetheless.
